Fenn Cup 2009 – Girls competition hots up for Paddle NSW members

This summer sees the launch of a new ocean racing series on Sydney’s Northern Beaches known as the Fenn Cup Ocean Series. This series will put Sydney’s ocean racing on the international stage and bring some of Australia’s best ocean paddlers and athletes together.

For Paddle NSW members Naomi Flood and Jo Bridgen-Jones it’s going to be an exciting series as the girls battle it out on the open water. These two girls bring with them very different paddling experiences and backgrounds, but the one thing they do have in common is the determination to cross the line first.

Champion Ironwoman Namoi Flood is no stranger to the ocean having won almost every title there is in Surf Life Saving. Naomi competed in her first Molokai Challenge in March this year and placed a remarkable 2nd in the open women whilst giving plenty of the men a run for their money. She has now turned her efforts to sprint kayaking in her quest to compete at the London Olympics, so she will be looking in top form for the series.

Then there is 21 year old Jo Brigden-Jones, Australia’s K1 Sprint Kayak Champion who at such a young age has already made a mark on the international kayaking scene. Jo recently returned from her first Senior World Championships with a 5th in the K4 relay, 6th in the K4 200m and 8th in the premier event K1 500m. She is well on her way to the London Olympics with GOLD in her sights. Although she has been paddling kayaks since a junior she has only recently taken to ocean racing. Competing in one of her first ocean races at the US Surf Ski champs in San Francisco, Jo picked up a silver medal behind Namoi with both Aussie girls well ahead of their US competitors.

Whilst these two training buddies battle it out on the ocean, hot competition will also come from Queenslanders Kirsty Holmes and Hayley Bateup, along with Olympian and Paddle NSW member Yanda Nossiter who is returning to ocean racing this year.

The series is to be held over 3 weekends, 4 races in total. Paddles have the choice of either the 16-20km Fenn Cup Downwind race or the shorter 8km Skoda Cup. It’s open to all types of paddle craft including ocean racing ski’s, spec ski’s, plastic kayaks, OC1 & OC2 and Stand up paddle boards. With over $50,000 in cash and prizes to be given away it is going to be exciting times for Australian Ocean Racing. So lock the dates into you paddling calendar and don’t miss these events this summer.
