Rose Bay ski paddler Tommy Woodriff wins the 12km Bondi to Watson Bay ocean race

Local ski paddler Tommy Woodriff scored a convincing win in testing weather in the 12km Bondi to Watson Bay ocean race last weekend.

Woodriff, 44, a Rose Bay resident and Bronte Surf Life Saving Club member, was buffeted by a strong crosswind and two-metre sea swell as he raced over the course in a sizzling 46 minutes and 31 seconds.

Makai Paddlers score a win on the double

MAKAI Paddlers recently travelled north to Bayview on Sydney’s Pittwater to compete in the Paddle NSW winter harbour series.

Ty Graham represented the one-man outrigger crew, while Chris Welsh, Paul Watkins, and Damo Staunton all raced in the open ski division.

A classic 20 Beaches Classic

After months of preparation for the event mother nature posed the organisers a tough question. In the face of a destructive Easterly crashing against the Northern Beaches and closing them, what should the course be? There were hopes of a start from Fisherman’s Beach but then if a paddler had to get into trouble it would mean real trouble and rescue would be difficult.

Lifejacket safety will be a focus of Boating Safety Officers’ activity on Sydney’s waterways with the launch of a new campaign encouraging everyone to wear lifejackets at all times when on the water.
